which Algorithm should be used to protect credentails

Hi,
which kind of secure encryption algorithm we should use to secure credentials
eg md5 or which one,well sometime it seems the standard
encryption mechanism r not sufficient enough to escape the hand of wrong guys

can any one suggest the adv and disv of creating our own encrytion mecahnism
