SQL Server Setup: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created

The computer has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed.
We want to install SQL Server Express (file SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe).  During the installation we get this setup failure: "SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created."
Prior to this we have uninstalled SQL Server 2012 which was not useful.
Is there a workaround?
