Storing a variable between events...

Hi,

I know you can store a variable in a session state, is there a more efficient way I can get one variable with an assigned value from say a page load event into a different even triggered by some control?

so if in page load I have

dim something as String = "howdy"

how do I access "somthing" in, say, page unload event?
