how do i use a custom validator with an ajax webservice?

i have searched the web and can't find a solution to this.

does anyone have an example of a custom validator doing validation on the server using webservices , ajax and NOT updatepanels?

I have googled it and there are a few people who have tried al with different levels of success, non of which are working 100%.
