postback clears textbox whose value came from javascript

I use javascript to place a value in a text box. But when a postback occurs, this value gets cleared. If the value is entered manualy by the user, it remains on postback. Can someone please explain why this is happening?


How can I ensure a textbox retains its value regardless of whether the value was set manually or through javascript?
