Manually validate the password "Answer"

I must have read 100 threads where developers are asking this question and so far none of them ever actually resolve the problem.
I want to manually validate the security password "Answer" the user has input into a text box. Please read carefully the details because the patteren in all the other threads is a lot of miscommunication and answers which will not work.
I am using asp.net 4.0.
My password format is hashed and is using the standard SQL provider. So the "Answer" is not in plain text which means you can not just query the record and compare the PasswordAnswer column to the text entered by the user.
It also means you cannot use the GetPassword("answer") method as it will throw an exception because the password is hashed and cannot be retrieved.
