Premise: I have a VM where in SQL Server 2012 is already installed; and I need to install SQL 2008 Express to get another piece of software working.
Especially as legacy 3rd party solutions are often hard coded against specific versions of Microsoft products, I would have thought this to be a supported path; it turns out I am wrong.
While trying to install SQL 2008 express, the installation stops midway and requests a file named sqlncli[1].msi that it claims it created during a previous step.  Navigating through the temporary files and folders of the SQL express exe reveals that no such file is created.  I have tried both the 2008 and the 2012 versions of this file found on Microsoft's website; however, the installation claims these to be wrong the file and refuses to go any further.

What do I have to do to get the installer to get past this error?

Thanks,
Mike
