adding DropDownList items from string[] array

Doesn't cause an error, yet it doesn't work either:
Ive checked - coloritems is filled properly.  Problem is with assigning values to the control:
String colorstring = dt.Rows[0]["colors"].ToString();

string[] coloritems = colorstring.Split(',');

for (int i = 0; i < (coloritems.GetUpperBound(0) + 1); i++)
