Asp.net Membership issue in ashx

I have developed a website using the asp.net mership system and it works very well, however i have a issue with retreving the mebership details in a ashx request.
The asp.net mebership object is returning null, even though it is called from a logged in page, this code works great everwhere else.
Also sessions seem to have a null value in this call even if they populated in the page that makes this call. I tried to populate the membership key in a session then retrive it here but it does not work
any other suggestions ? thanks for your help !!!
