Access Custom Control in DetailView

hi 

I have insert custom control in DetailsView Edit Item template.
Now I need to access this control and set it's properties from below event

Protected Overrides Sub OnLoad(ByVal e As EventArgs)


I have try using
 Dim Customc1 As TestCustomControl= DetailsView1.EmptyDataTemplate.FindControl("Custom1")

Could you please tell me how Could I access a control on Detailview edit Item template in the this
event Protected Overrides Sub OnLoad(ByVal e As EventArgs)
