Regex to exclue strings

Hello Friends,

I want to get a particular word for e.g. "car" (only a complete word not a part of another word) from the string. For that Ihave used \\bcar\\b" and it is all working on fine. But now I want to modify the regex so that it should not check the strings in side the "<" and ">" for e.g. "I am in the <good car>" then the regex should not detect the "car" word inside the "<" ans ">". How I should modify it? Please let me know.
