I got around the problem - sort of - by explicitly setting focus to the next control in sequence. This was a compromise but seemed to be a reasonable one. The person testing my software doesn't like it though as she pointed out that a user might like to click in a different field than is expected, which is true.
So I'm back here wondering if there's a way to record the ID of the last control to have focus before the server-side code is run? Then I could restore that focus when control returns from the server.
Might this be possible?
