Checking if a URL is valid

Hi,
How can I check if a URL submitted is valid.
For example if a user submits:
http://www.awebsite.com/firstfolder/secondfolder/thirdpage.aspx
I want to check if the url submitted is a valid URL. Save the url if valid other wise do some other action.
