I had SQL Server Express 2005 installed with VS 2008 Pro v 9.0.21022.8 RTM. My apps deployed on various machines with mdf files for those apps. On some servers the SSE was a later version, so when I copied the mdf file back for post mortem examination when
some operation behaved unexpectedly, I could not read it, because the database file was upgraded by that machine's SSE. My .net is 3.5 SP 1 That is background.
To solve that problem, I upgraded my SSE to 2008 R2. AOK except my VS 2008 Server Explorer no longer worked for my SSE database connections. "This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported."
Okay, to manage SSE files now, I tried to install Mangement Studio Express 2008 R2. All the rules passed or skipped except one: "Previous releases of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008"
Now what?
