switching to markup deletes some of my code!

For quite some time I couldnt figure out what the heck was happening, but I finally realized that when I switch to the markup of my code, visual web developer actually deletes some of my code!! It deletes any variables being passed from server side:
<%=variable%>
Why would it modify my code like this? Anyone else had this problem? Know of a solution?
