click event on wrong page?

 Hello,
I am currently working on a webite that is acting differently than it has to this point.
 
Whenever I try to add a click event in design mode it adds it to the aspx page between <script> tags instead of on a vb page. Is there a setting that I might have inadvertently changed to cause this behavior?
As an added side effect, most of the event and variables listed in my vb pages are coming up as not declared or some other error.
