How to Return a value to calling procedure

I want to return a value of some description to my calling procedure.
the method calls the following code on seperate page.
Called page method
Try
            Dim picture As Byte() = DirectCast(fetchScalar("query"), Byte())
          
        Catch ex As Exception
           
        End Try
 problem is the page method that call this page goes to end of procedure before execution of method then displays image if exists.
how can i get it to capture a return call inorder that i may run a conditional statement !
