I have an ASP.NET app that allows users working at home to list, download from and upload files to their respective home directories (stored on a SAN). In order to do this, I impersonate the domain user programmatically and then use the ASP.NET IO functions to list, get and put files on the share. This works great as long as the web server is part of the domain, but that's definitely something we want to avoid.
I've read that you can solve this by having identical local accounts on the webserver and the file share, but I work at a university and we have over 6000 domain accounts in our AD, so that's not an option.

Is it really not possible to impersonate a domain user from a server that is not part of the domain?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Rickard
