Stop form submit with client script

I want to perform some client javascript validation before submitting the form through the asp button control.I have successfully added the onclick attribute to the submit button by this codebtnSubmit.Attributes.Add("onclick", "validation()");

Now I want the client script to stop the form from submitting when a certain condition is met. What code should I put in the client validation() function to perform this?
