I'm a newbie looking for "where to start reading" regarding how the big boys protect their data.  In other words, I don't want you to tell me how to fix my immediate problem, I want you to tell me what book (or ?) to read to start bringing myself up to speed on the whole subject.
My company keeps all it's sensitive data behind a firewall and uses SQL Server's replication to migrate some less sensitive data to a database outside the firewall.  This "outside" database is then accessed by public-facing web apps. This ensures that if anybody hacks our system, they'll only get into our "less sensitive" data.
Now we want to start putting up some public-facing web apps that will need full access to our data, and our first question is "what do we need to know".
(FWIW, there are about six or seven "For Dummies" books that appear to cover parts of the issue.
TIA,
