DropDownlist don't hold state

hi all i have a dropdownlist that won't hold state
if i add Response.Redirect("Default.aspx?sel" + ddlProject.SelectedValue);
but if i uncommet it. it holdes state just fine. My problem is that i want the dropdownlist to holde it's state when it does the postback

if any of you would like to see the html too please let me know
