sql aggregate function

I am trying to come up with a aggregate function
Lets say you had two values
customer id
and customer date
Select customer.id,count(*) from customers where customerDate
between '1 Aug 2008 And 31 Aug 2008'
Group  By customer ID;
am I on the right tract??
