Can we use wild card for file check?

I have a file name that I want to check if it exists, but don't want to restrict the check on fileextension, how can I do it?
Lets say I have a filename 'JohnDoeResume', it can exist both as pdf or doc or docx. How can I check if a file already exists for this name?
