Forms Authentication - not sure why this is working without Global.aspx

I am using forms authentication and considering passing the userID as UserData as pipe-delimited data. In the past I've included a Globals file, which I assumed prepared the role information and passed it along. What I don't get is why I can read the UserData when I comment out the code in globals and simply reference it in default.aspx. Maybe I'm missing something but what functionality is being provided/overrided in the global file, that I should keep it? Thanks - just scratching my head on this one.
