The best payment approach

I was wondering what is the best and above all safest model for the payment (ordercheckout) page(s) ?


Having checkout and orderplaced pages seems to be not the best idea as you are facing the double clicks issue like that.
Having an intermediate page has another issue which is using sessions ..... etc. etc.


So what is the best way of implementing safe and user friendly order system?
