I have been trawling the website for a while to find an answer to this problem but have found it myself, so the result mught help someone out there.
I started a project in DotNet V2.0 & have been steadily migrating through the latest versions and practices. Using ASP.NET Configuration in VS 2008 I created my first users and roles and then developed routines from there. Everything fine at the moment.
Then I wanted to upgrade to Microsoft Patterns and Practices V4.1 and used the "Edit Library Configuration" tool. Unknown to me it changed the web.config file to thow in some more sections but more importantly it changed the <connectionstrins> setting. There were 2 strings initially: ConnectionString and LocalSQLServer. After the library configuration tool there was only 1 (ConnectionString).
