The liner <%= val %> gives the output: <%= val %>

I have a usercontrol wich I use <%= val  %> to output the proprety val but it gives this: &lt;%= val  %> in the rendered page. Which means he totally ignores the asp tag and refres it to plain html and converts the start of the tag as html entity. I also used <% Response.Write(val) %> and it gives me: &lt;% Response.Write(val) %>. What the hell is going on here? It suppose to be very simple and straightfoward. How to make it output the value inside the val. How to fix it?
