How do I change the CSS class of a cell?

I have a table cell that is styles with CSS by assigning the cell's class.  Under certain conditions, I'd want to remove or possible change the styling.  How can I change the class programmatically?  I assigned the cell an id, but the id isn't recognized in the code behind.
