Can I get confirmation mail has been sent ?

 I use the IIS SMTP service by creating an SMTP and MailMessage object and then sending it with something like
smtp.Send(objMailMessage)
The problem is, if the mail server is down the message does not get sent and my application is none the wiser.
Is there an alternative method of sending that will provide confirmation that a message has indeed been sent ?
