How can I tie into the validatin controls client side?

I want to make required fields more obvious on my forms.  For example, I'd like to add a red border around the div when an input field doesn't validate, or display one image if it does validate and another image if it doesn't.  But I don't want to write all my own client side validation code.  I know there's a way to tap into the validation controls client side (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa479045.aspx#aspplusvalid_clientside scroll down to the Bypassing Client Validation / Special effects section), but it only works in IE.  Is there a way to do it that works in more browsers?
