SelectedValue not in the list (Dropdownlist in an edititemtemplate of a gridview itemtemplate column)

 Hello all,
 This problem has been a nightmare for me the last couple of days. Any help will be greatly appreciated. 
 I have a gridview and a template column inside it. My situation is I have to bind data to grids, dropdowns and everything else in the code (as I get my data from webservices).  Now the template columns edititemtemplate has a dropdownlist. I set the SelectedValue of the dropdownlist to Bind("TechName") which is a column in my data source. When I hit edit on a row I have the following code in RowEditing event.
        protected void GridView1_RowEditing(object sender, GridViewEditEventArgs e)
        {
            GridView1.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex;
            BindSMSMappingData();
       ...
