Prevent div from catching click event

I have a div that is merely for visuals (a shadow effect). The problem is if a user clicks on this div-area the click happens on this div (obviously) rather than the controls that are behind it. Is there any way to stop this div from catching click-events, so the controls behind it receives them instead?
