validation is trying to validate when i click edit

Textbox1 does not exist when the gridview is in read mode
But does exist when in edit mode

The error occurs when I click the (edit link/button in the gridview) which would indicate that the CustomerValidator is firing before the gridview row has entered edit mode.
Is there a way of configuring the customerValidator control to fire after the gridview row has been re-created in edit mode?
