Memberships and Roles Question

Dear,

I setted up from a while a Memberships and Roles  for my website, and it works perfectly. But I have a question:

Where does the data of users are found? (new registered members)? in the web.config?

If yes, does it an efficent way to add memberships and rols to the website in this way instead of database?

Thx
