FindControl using master page

I have successfully used FindControl before but now it does not work. This is probably because I'm now using a Master page?
What has worked with a standalone page:
   Control tst = FindControl("CheckBox1");
   Control tst2 = FindControl("ImageButton1");
These return null when in a page which has a master.
