ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider and Trust Levels

I am using the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider with forms authentication on my site.  I cannot get it to work unless I give the application full trust level:

<trust level="Full" originUrl=""/>

Is it possible to use the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider with a lower trust level, or am I required to write a custom trust level?
