Can't seem to get custom roles to work.

Hello, I have been fighting for the past 2 days trying to handle custom authentication in ASP.net.  I thought I had it all working pretty good there in the beginning  ... I wrote an authentication event handler for the login control, and used my own logic there to make it work w/o needing a data backend.    I absolutely do not want to mess around with any custom data providers or anything.  I want to hardcode my authentication into the application and hard code some roles so that I can use LoginView's to control the look and functionality of the application for various roles.
So far I have found a ton of different examples, and none seem to work for me.  They all appear to execute fine and pretend like it worked, only when I do certain things, my role is never applied within the framework.   Specifically, my LoginView does not work, and when I make calls to "Roles.IsUserInRole()" it never reports my user is in the role that ...
