page refreshes anytime anything is clicked

I have a page that loads some textboxes with some values from an sql database on the Page_load event for editing, when i click submit the page is refreshed and the old values are read back into the boxes before the edited values can be read out. i also noticed that the page sometimes refreshes when u click anycontrol even a label. what is causing this?
