TableCellHeader With Text AND Image

I need to create a tableheader cell that will have both an image and text.   (The data of the table is populated via a SqlDataReader.)   The purpose of this will be for the user to be able to click the image and have the table sorted by column.  Essentially, I need to be able to create this html code from the code-behind:

<td style="width: 40px"><asp:ImageButton ID="ImageButton1" runat="server" ImageUrl="images/SortDown.gif" OnClick="ImageButton1_Click" /> text  here</td>
Would it be easier to use a GridView?  I am trying to keep the page as lean as possible so I was trying to avoid a GridView.
