Navigate to last page(History) on button click

I have a problem working with below code on button click of the page. On button click, it has to show me a message using java script and on click of okay button on java script message box it has to direct me to last page where I was.
I have used window.history.back() inorder to navigate back to the last page but it's not working.
I will appreaciate your help if you can suggest me best approach for this.
