Stripping unicode characters from a string

Is there any way to remove foreign characters from a string?

For instance, if a string contained some alphabetical characters and some chinese symbols, is there a way to remove all the chinese symbols from the string leaving behind the alphabetical?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
