Membership provider or custom user tables

Hi we are about to embark on a project which will involve users becoming members of the site, we wanted to find out what route we should go down, should we use the membership provider or build our own tables, and methods. If we do use the membership provider are there any potential fallbacks, for instance if the site grows.
