Problems with Drop Down List Inside a Repeater - SelectedIndexChanged Event Not Firing

I have a drop down list as a child control in a repeater. The _SelectedIndexChanged event is not firing. When I copy the control and place it outside the Repeater, the event fires without any problems. I'm assuming then that the issue resides somewhere with the fact that its a child control of the repeater.
1) Viewstate of the Repeater is set to true
2) Viewstate of the Drop Down List is set to true
3) Autopost back is set to true
4) To ensure that the drop down list is connected to the event, I'd added code in the _ItemCreated event to explicity add the handler.

5) When the drop down list was copied as-is from within the repeater to outside of it the code runs.
