assign membership role

hi i was wondering if someone could tell me how i assign a role to a new member automatically.
at the moment i have two roles , admin and users
they have both be given acces to various pages (admin can only get in to the admin page)
what i want to know is , when a user registers on my site how can i automatically put them into the users role.
can this be done?
