Service Layer in Layered Architecture

Dear All,
We are developing project using Asp.Net with c sharp in Layered Architecture namely DataAccesLayer,BusinessLayer,ServiceLayer and Presentation layer. I am new to layered architecture..and also here we are using WCF Service  to Service Layer..My question is why we need to use and purpose of Service layer in Layered architecture.what service layer is doing..
