How can I use code behind files in a separate project?

I need to have the code behind files for all of my web pages in my website kept together in a separate project.  To do this, I created a Default.aspx file with a code behind Default.cs in C# in a class library project, but I get an error stating that the code behind file could not be loaded.  Please help.
