Finding users in roles

running VS 2005 and Sql 2005 Dev

i can authenticate the user in the login screen.  but when it comes to finding what role that user is a member of i can't get to work.

i tried to use the following code:

Roles.IsUserInRole("User", "Role")

&

My.User.IsInRole("Role")

both return false.  can't seem to figure out what i'm doing wrong.

any help would be awsome
