Need fixed spacing between columns on datalist

I'm using a datalist to display some data that may be just for one record, two records or several. When there are just 2 records, the spacing between the columns is very wide as opposed to when there are 3 columns. Is there a way to keep the colums in relativily the same positions when there are only 2 records? I want this:

Name:  John Doe   Date: 1/1/02             Name:  Sam Smith    Date: 10/1/03

not this

Name:  John Doe   Date: 1/1/02                                                                      Na ...
