secure username and password

 I am using ASP .NET VS 2012.  I want to create a website that uses secure username and password.
Should I just use regular sessions for this?  Will I need to do anything extra to make it secure so the
data being sent can't be read by anyone else, or does Visual Studio 2012 handle this automatically?
For example, I have heard about password salting, do I have to do this myself, or make any other
security measures to ensure that others can't read my web site visitors username, password, and
other information, or will this be handled automatically?
