Personalized Urls

 I wanted to have my url
www.domain.com/products.aspx?id=1
changed to www.domain.com/shoes

I was able to do this by using HttpHandlers.
 However, when I publish to the hosting server, IIS is redirecting to 404 error page before the HttpHandler even sees the request. I placed the URL rewriter code in the 404 page instead to handle this. But thats not the ideal solution. Why is this happening and how can I prevent it?
